February 29, 2004The Airaid system use the stock ruber vacum hose connected to a 2 3/8" OD x 3" Long tube with an high flow air filter attached to it. If you cut off an 1" or 1.5" of the Helmholtz resonator going to the carb and remove the other resonator going into the air box and relpace air filter with an high flow one. Would this get the same performance?

February 29, 2004Dunno, but you'd be better than stock for performance.
When PTDoItYourself.Net comes back up (a week or so) look thru some of the DIY intakes there.
February 29, 2004I have the Airaid on my wife's '01 PT. It is much better than stock and is still much better than a modded factory airbox with a K&N drop in filter only because I have removed 10" of the hood rubber seal by the Airaid filter. This allows cold air to get into the filter. The only way to make the modded factory airbox w/K&N filter as good would be to run 2" flex hose from the opening next to the foglight up to the fenderwell hole. You have to be sure to put three weep holes at the lowest point of the flex hose for any moisture that gets in the hose. I have this flex hose setup on my GT and it works great.
March 1, 2004I have been looking for something other than stock for a long time now, and don't want to pay those high prices.
March 1, 2004Modify your stock airbox. Remove the white silencer at the hose outlet inside the airbox top. Take the silencer out of the airbox at the fenderwell and cut it so it's flush with the inside of the airbox and the outside part will still suck in air from the fenderwell hole. Run the 2" flex hose from the opening next to the fog light up to the fenderwell hole. Put in a K&N drop in filter and you will be sucking more cold air in and not more hot air like those expensive intakes. If you want real good airflow replace that turbo up pipe that starts out at 3" at the airbox top and narrows down to 1.5" inside the hose because it is the third silencer.
March 2, 2004Mean Green,
I have done the K&N and the white silencer, but not the other.
How do you insure that the flex tube won't get water in it, need that info. and the part numbers or info on what exact it is. I live in a heavy rain and possible flood area in FL. I have taken the PT in water higher than the foglights before.
Do I just get hose clamps to seal it off with or should I get some silicone sealant stuff.
Im not sure what the turbo up pipe is, I don't have a turbo if it is only on the turbo, if that what you mean.
March 2, 2004If you drive in water higher than the fog lights then don't do the 2" flex hose. That would not be good. Sorry, turbo up pipe is for turbo only.
March 3, 2004Mean Green,
You have given me an Idea that I would like to run with.
I want to maybe put it near the front grille area, and point it down or something so rain doesn't get in there.
Do you remember how you made your so that it wouldn't suck up air?
Suck up water I mean.
March 3, 2004Green,
What type of flex tube did you get? The plastic or the metal for exhaust?
March 3, 2004Green ran 2.5" air duct hose from air box inlet to fire wall (see pictures) but lost a little in performance so went back to my rubber tube on air box inlet with air duct hose run down next to it to get some cooler air.
March 3, 2004I bought plastic flex 2" OD hose that is used for swimming pools for cleaning I think. I tried to find room in the grill area but there just isn't any.
king, I don't understand what you mean? "Do you remember how you made your so that it wouldn't suck up air?"

I went to the autoparts store and all they had was the exhaust tubing, which can't be bent much.

About this, I miss typed and wanted to say wouldn't suck up water.
