April 25, 2007Hey guys, Need your help! When i took my pt out for a drive today something was clunking in the front suspension like a loose bolt. Every little bump on the road i heard it, Feels like a strut? I jacked up the car shook the wheels up down side to side seems all ok, no play. Before i pick up two new struts i thought i would ask you guys' opinion. The PT is a 2002 aut.40,000 miles THANKS

April 25, 2007Does it happen when you turn or when driving slow? It may be the same problem I have. Sometimes it will stay for a while and sometimes I just hear it every now and then. I've been told that it could be a bushing that is worn. Not sure though, haven't had it checked into. It's been happening off and on for over a year for me but it sounds like the same thing like something is loose and makes a loud popping sound, definately happens on bumps.
If this isn't the answer, you're bound to find it here.
April 26, 2007Welcome,
I had a noise that my PT was making on the right side. I would notice it when I was driving slow, you know making a turn or pulling into my driveway.
Took the car into the dealer for an oil change and described the sound as perhaps a worn bushing and we took it out for a test drive and sure enough there was that sound. The put it up on the lift and found both my control arms needed to be replaced. The bushings were shot and the arms were badly worn.
Lucky for me it was warranty work.
April 26, 2007If that's the case for me, do you know how much it would cost without warranty??? Need to get it done but don't know how much it'll cost.
April 26, 2007Well i think thats it, lower control arm bushings. Reading a lot of diffrent sites today. It seems to be a common problem for 2001-2002 pt cruisers. Quote from a nether website, Bushings, Some people have been noting early wear on front and rear bushings, with potential damage to the Watts linkage if they fail. Owners of early PTs should check their bushings for wear periodically, starting at 40,000 miles (check the front lower control arm bushings and rear Watts linkage central link). Later PTs apparently used better bushings (we don't know when they switched.) A Watts link is about $170-$200 installed, a new front is $500. If the dealer won't cover it, Going to look at mine tomorrow.
April 27, 2007Well guys that was it, The control arm bushing, but only the one towards the rear of the control arm. "towards the rear of the car".The bushing that stands up. What i could see is that the rubber separates from the steel and the control arm falls down and sits on the frame, I made a test, I cut a piece of industrial rubber in the shape of a U then took a small jack and lifted up the control arm so it's off the frame slid the U shape rubber under the arm then let the jack down. Now the control arm is off the frame and in place. Took the pt for a test drive. That's it no more noise! It should last till i pick up a Teflon bushing kit.
April 27, 2007PrettyTempingCrzr,
The dealer told me each control arm runs $750!
By the way still working on getting you the Cat in the PT Cruiser...I think my two daughters hid the dic on me. I was playing it every time the got in the car when I first got the CD.
Glad to hear you found the cause of your noise! Bushing are way cheaper than control arms replacement. When they showed me the control arms the bushing were completely gone. The dealer had no idea how that could have happened. I suggested perhaps they dry rotted, but they said that should not have happened to car that was only two years old!
So it's a mystery!
April 28, 2007Wow that's expensive, so if I don't get the bushings replaced I may have to replace the whole control arms?? If so, I will have to get it done soon.
No problem, I just hope the wife doesn't do the same thing with my cd. At least I'll have the chance to listen to it ALL THE TIME I'm drivin' by myself. Hope you can find your cd though.
