September 1, 2007My car has started leaving water spots with some kind of fluid on the front left side. I took it to a mechanic and he said it needs a new water pump and also will have to do the timingbelt at the same time. Does anybody know if it could be anything else. Thanks Meanbiz

September 1, 2007How many miles on your car? Water pump and timing belt at the same time is a very good idea.
September 1, 2007Hay Tom if it was the water pump would it not be leaving spots on the right Side ??
and yes the water pump and timing belt and timing components should be replaced at the same time
September 2, 2007Sorry, actually was an indirect question about the wp and timing belt and if needed replacing. Not really related to leaking question. I'd hate to see someone get bamboozed into replacing these at say 50k miles.
Relating to the leak it can sometimes be really hard to discover the origin of a leak. It could be leaking on the right side and running over to the left side before hitting the ground. I would probably put the car up on ramps, totally wipe down the underneath and then run the car a bit and then checking the underneath for signs of leakage. Having the car on a hoist would be a big bonus.

That is the best way to see what is leaking. if you still can not find it, drop in the coolant die in the antifreeze and drag out the florescent light and you should see it.
September 2, 2007Hey Thanks You All,
My car has about 65000 miles on it. And the manual says the wp should be changed around that time. I'm gonna get a second opinion,
because the price seems too high. $1000. when it could be something else. You all are lifesavers. Thanks again
September 2, 2007Man that is way too much. look for the water pump to go out at 100,000 miles.
September 2, 2007I agree with Dave. Around 100k miles. 60k is way to early. You are supposed to do the wp and timing belt at the same time.
