I've been tring to find out the what the biggest size rims that will fit on my 04 pt without having to do alot of mod to the wheel well. It has 15's now but want to put 18's or 19's on. Will I have to do anything to my wheel wells when changing my rim size?Forums : Tires & Wheels : Bigger rims (3039 Views)

Hey their SkyDaddy,At stock height you should have no problems with 18-19" rims. Just keep in mind that generally when you increase rim size, you are gonna decrease tire size to offset everything. When you compensate with a smaller tire size, you will not only lose ride quality, but also run the risk of damaging a wheel if you hit a pot hole.
One big question is, do you plan on lowering your ride, and if so, are you going to lower it with springs, or bags? My ride has the stock 17's on it, and rolls on a custom 3/5 drop on springs. I have 4" clearance from the body to the ground, and 1/2" clearance from wheel well to the ground in front. So for me, 17's are as far as I will go, and still be able to drive it. Here are a couple of pics:

Anyways, thats my take on it. Take it easy!

Agree w/Candyman. If you don't use your PT to commute, go for it, but 18 or 19 is very expensive (tire selection is limited and pricey, too) and hit a pothole and you'll probably lose a rim & tire...April 22, 2008
Nice Ride Don.
I like the 17" as well.
Hay Don have you thought of painting the end of the lugs Tangerine?

thanks for the replys guys. Yes I plan on lowering with springs. Now that I see how yours with 17's candyman I will check some out.April 28, 2008
I have 18's, I will say rim damage may happen. Get yourself a good metal file if you do get 18's as you may come in contact with a curb. The ride is lot more harsh then on the standard wheels whether 15 or 16.Although I love the look and love the ride, I hate the damage to the rims when you touch something. I find I must really drive more carefully with the Pt's horrible turning radius and all, you find curbs easier. 17's with a spring kit should be about comparable.

Oh and to mention that my 18 are the same size as my 16. 225/45/18 from 205/55/16. They may be off about 1/8" or so, but the radar deter says different.Almost all upgrades to you stock wheels will allow you to increase your track or tire width.

Hey guys,I just wanted to jump in here real quick, and say, that when time comes to upgrade to bigger rims, if at any time down the road you choose to put your ride on air bags, watch going much wider than stock! The reason for this is, their is a clearance issue in the front where by going a little wider on rim size, it will hit, and will not allow the front end to drop all the way down. Both my good friends Bruce, and Poi are on air, and are running 18's. The only difference is, Poi is running on stock width, while Bruce's are a little wider. Here is the difference:
This is Bruce's ride with the bags dropped: Sorry for not having a better pic of the front.

And Poi's ride: Notice the front bumper clearance.

And, just because I love the look of this one, Coy with Hawaiian Silver still has bragging rights in my book for the most droped PT I have seen to date:

Other than that, no matter what size rims you choose, just watch the pot holes, cruise easy, and you should be good to go! Of course you ever chose to go with something like this, and in that case, you can probably drive over most anything you want with no worries!

Cool pics Don!!!! I don't know about the 4x4 though?? But it does have plenty of clearance for other vehicles or even large boulders!!!!

I think that at this time since i'm going to use it a normal car I will most likly go with springs. There are alto of country roads around me and as u know they are not the best paved roads. I do like the pics of the two on bags, but not so much the jacked up pt. It is neat. just goes to show you what you can do if you want to and have the $.I will say its different.lol thanks guysOctober 7, 2008
I see I'm coming here a bit late but it's worth the try. Along with buying bigger rims (18") I also want to know how wide I could go before it starts to past the fenders. I'm trying to get rims with a massive lip and most of them come as 18x8. Would that be too wide? I have adjustable coilovers to adjust the ride height.October 11, 2011
So ive been wanting to put rim and tire packages on my PT but cant decide! ive kinda got the chrome look now thru out, but not sure that i want to go with chrome rims. i was kinda thinking about black...would love some suggestions/thoughts on would look best. thanks!
